1. What is Cellular PVC Trim & Moulding?
It is a high-performance building material made from extruded polyvinyl chloride. Unlike standard rigid PVC, Cellular PVC has a foamed core that gives it a density and workability similar to white pine or cedar, but without the natural flaws like knots or rot.
2. Does it rot, warp, or attract termites?
No. One of the biggest advantages of PVC moulding is that it is 100% moisture-resistant and insect-proof. It will not rot, cup, split, or twist over time, making it ideal for high-humidity areas like bathrooms and ground-contact exterior applications.
3. Can PVC trim be used for interior applications?
Absolutely. While widely used for exteriors, it is becoming mainstream for interiors-especially in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens-due to its waterproof nature and ease of cleaning.
4. Do I need to paint it?
It comes in a standard semi-matte white finish and can be installed without painting. However, if you choose to paint it, it holds paint much better and longer than wood because it doesn't absorb moisture that causes paint to peel.
5. Are there restrictions on paint colors?
Yes. For best results, use paints with a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of 55 or higher (light to medium colors). Darker colors absorb too much heat, which can cause the PVC to expand or warp.
6. How does it handle extreme temperatures?
PVC expands and contracts more than wood. Proper installation requires leaving a small gap at joints (to be filled with flexible sealant) or using scarf joints to manage thermal movement in varying climates.
7. Can it be heat-bent into curves?
Yes! This is a unique advantage. PVC trim can be heat-formed into arches for windows, curved doorways, or custom architectural features that are difficult and expensive to achieve with wood.
8. What tools are needed for installation?
You can use standard woodworking tools. It can be cut, milled, shaped, and routed just like wood. We recommend using carbide-tipped blades for the cleanest edges.
9. What type of fasteners and glue should I use?
Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized nails/screws to prevent rust. For bonding, use specialized PVC cements or adhesives that chemically weld the joints together for a seamless look.
10. Is it a structural material?
No. PVC trim and moulding are non-structural. They should never be used for load-bearing applications like house framing or deck joists.
11. How do I clean PVC moulding?
It is virtually maintenance-free. For dirt or stains, simply use mild soap and water. For tougher grime, a diluted bleach solution or a specialized vinyl cleaner works well.
12. Is PVC trim environmentally friendly?
Yes, in terms of longevity. It lasts significantly longer than wood, reducing the need for replacements. Many manufacturers also use recycled content and the material itself is 100% recyclable.
13. What standard profiles are available?
Common profiles include Brick Mould, Crown Moulding, Baseboards, S4S Boards, Quarter Round, and Drip Caps. Custom profiles can also be extruded to match specific architectural designs.
14. Does it have a "wood grain" texture?
We offer both Smooth and Reversible (Smooth/Wood Grain) finishes. The wood grain texture (often called "Timber Grain" or "Cedar Texture") provides the look of natural wood without the maintenance.
15. What is the typical lifespan?
Under normal conditions, PVC trim can last 25 to 50 years or more.
